At RefineU MedSpa in Oklahoma City, OK, we use the most effective products on the market, including the Juvederm collection of dermal fillers. You’ve probably heard about these fillers, but you may also be aware that there are quite a few products in this family of fillers. Which should you be using?
What Type of Juvederm Filler Should You Be Using?
Your Aesthetic Concern
Each of the products in this line of dermal fillers is specially designed to be most effective in particular areas or for particular concerns. Your first step in deciding which filler to use is to consider your area of need. Here are some of the most common treatment areas:
Nasolabial Folds
These are the lines running from the outside of your nose to both corners of your mouth, separating the cheeks from the upper lip. These folds get deeper with time as we lose collagen and skin begins to sag. These folds are also sometimes referred to as your “laugh lines.”
Marionette Lines
These deep wrinkles are located beneath the nasolabial folds. They are typically heavy lines, and they get their name from their resemblance to the strings used to manipulate marionette puppets.
Temples
The skin to the side of our eyes, located where one would most commonly attempt to massage out a headache, can become hollow with age.
Cheeks
We usually think of wrinkles when we consider the effects of aging, but a hollow look to the cheeks is often a dead giveaway that we’re getting older. The cheeks begin to sag because of collagen loss. This disturbs the firm foundation of the skin, and the skin begins to look gaunt.
Crow’s Feet
Crow’s feet wrinkles are etched into the corners at the outer edge of the eye and are most visible upon smiling or squinting. These wrinkles are caused by UV exposure, loss of collagen, and the constant muscle movements we make when we smile and laugh.
Lips
Injectibles for the lips are used either to get rid of the vertical wrinkles by filling in the peripheral outline, or they can be injected into the lips themselves to give volume and plumping.
Types of Juvederm and Their Uses
Perhaps you want to recapture the fullness you may have lost over time, you simply want more volume, or you are looking to balance out, or “sculpt,” an uneven feature. Your next step in determining the best filler for your needs is to know what the various fillers in the line can do.
1. Original
The original Juvederm is the world’s best-selling dermal filler. It’s been researched for years and is proven to be a safe way to get rid of lines and wrinkles. This product is great for minor to moderate concerns, and particularly in addressing the lines on the nose and mouth, the lips, and filling in the cheeks.
2. Ultra Plus
Ultra Plus is specifically formulated to give you gorgeous, full lips. Ultra Plus is thicker and can address deeper concerns than the original, so it’s also great for smoothing out moderate to severe lines and wrinkles in the face. This isn’t a case of “more is better,” though. If you want to treat less severe concerns over a broader area, the original is probably the best choice.
3. Volbella
While Volbella is used to correct fine “lipstick” lines around the mouth, it is also a lip augmentation product that adds volume without appearing puffy. As it contains a comparatively small amount of hyaluronic acid, it’s the ideal, light choice for use in very fine lines. If you’re just starting to see the signs of aging, ask us about Volbella.
4. Vollure
Released in 2017, Vollure is a thicker solution product made to treat moderate lines and folds around the lower face and the nose. If you are looking for a lifting quality to the appearance of your lips, ask us if Vollure is right for you. One of the benefits of Vollure is that the results last longer than with other products in the line: up to 18 months!
5. Voluma
With its more gelatine-like consistency, Voluma has been known to last as long as two years when injected into cheeks to provide volume. If you’re concerned about volume loss and a hollow or gaunt appearance, this is a wonderful choice. It’s typically injected deeper into the face than the other members of the Juvederm family, which is why it’s so effective for deeper muscles in the cheeks and more serious volume problems.
Making Your Choice
Our RefineU team is extremely knowledgeable, and with our extensive training and hands-on experience, we can give you the best recommendation for just the right solution to produce your ideal look. Come talk to us in a consultation, and we’ll discuss your concerns, look at your skin, go over the products available, and help you make the perfect decision.
Timing is Everything
Dermal fillers provide a temporary result. Some products last as little as six months, while others remain visible for up to two years or even longer. Just as the products we offer differ, each individual is unique. Some clients come in for treatment because they want to look their best for a special event or season. In that case, they may only visit once, or once a year, and then let their filler disappear.
Others consider their treatments to be part of a regular self-care routine, returning for treatments at regular, set intervals to maintain the results of their treatment all year round. You know best what’s right for you, and we can help you decide on the best option to meet your goals.
The Best Way to Maintain Your Result
If you are looking to keep your results looking fresh, we do recommend a regular routine of treatment. The good news is that you may need less product to maintain your appearance if you come in regularly rather than returning only after the product has completely disappeared. If you wait until the product is completely gone, you’re essentially putting yourself back at square one.
What Is Juvederm, Exactly?
Where injectables such as Botox, Dysport, and Jeuveau use a highly purified botulinum toxin to minimize muscle movement, this family of dermal fillers uses hyaluronic acid. Neither neuromodulators nor dermal fillers are necessarily better. Juvederm simply works in different ways and are best at targeting different concerns.
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally-occurring molecule already found in the body. Its purpose is to bind with moisture, resulting in plumping and fullness. These injections work to add volume to recapture a more youthful appearance.
Hyaluronic acid is capable of holding up to 1,000 times its own weight in water, so once injected, the plumping effect becomes apparent quite quickly. When you come to see us, we can help you decide whether dermal fillers, neuromodulators, or a combination of both are the best choice for your concerns.
Preparing for Your Treatment
Consultation and Preparation
Before you have treatment, you will need to inform us of all medications, both prescription and over-the-counter, that you are taking. Please also tell us about your supplements. In some cases, you might need to pause your medications or supplements temporarily, but we’ll let you know during your consultation.
You will need to reschedule if you are pregnant or nursing, or if you have a bacterial infection or open wound at the injection site. And be sure to keep your skin as clean as possible for best-looking results. As you always should, use a sunblock before treatment to avoid getting any sunburn. Drink water to stay hydrated, and don’t drink alcoholic beverages for twenty-four hours before treatment.
Aspirin and Blood-Thinners
You may have heard that aspirin is a blood-thinner, and that’s true. For the best possible results, we encourage you not to take aspirin or ibuprofen just before and after your treatment. If you’re on a prescription blood-thinning medication, talk with your doctor about whether it’s safe to stop taking it temporarily.
Post Treatment
You will experience no discomfort from your treatment, and you will not need to alter your life very much, if at all, following your injection appointment. Just about the only thing you need to do is remember to drink a lot of water.
Staying hydrated is important to your health, and it’s also important to allow your treatment results to last as long as possible. After all, hyaluronic acid binds with water to work its magic, so give it plenty to work with!
Complementary Services
At RefineU, our mission is to provide you with all the tools to look and feel your best. Along with Juvederm, we offer a full menu of services to refine and elevate your aesthetic outcome from head to toe.
Addressing Your Face
Along with these dermal fillers, we also offer Botox, Dysport, and Jeuveau. We also have Restylane fillers and Sculptra, as well as facial rejuvenation with the amazing Dermalinfusion, 3-in-1 facial that exfoliates, extracts, and infuses. This is a great way to complement your younger, plumper look with fresh, rejuvenated skin.
Microneedling is another excellent choice if you want to rejuvenate the skin of your whole face, and we can combine this with PRP in the vampire facial. Thread lifts are also available, and these are a great way to give yourself a bigger lift for an even more dramatically refreshed appearance.
Body and Health
If you have issues with sun damage, lesions, scars, and wrinkles in areas other than the face, ask us about laser treatments that can help. We can also use laser hair removal to get you smooth skin without all the shaving and razor burn. If you have a problem area on your body that simply won’t respond to your diet and exercise regime, ask us about body contouring.
